Cecil County Natural Gas Power Plant Proposed

RISING SUN, Md. (AP) -- A Virginia energy cooperative is proposing construction of a new natural gas-fired power plant near Rising Sun in northeastern Maryland.

The Old Dominion Electric Cooperative said Monday that it will seek approval to build the plant at the Rock Springs Generation Facility, which opened in 2003.

The cooperative says the new plant in Cecil County would use cleaner-burning natural gas and meet demand on the region's electric grid while creating 600 construction jobs and 30 permanent jobs. Old Dominion notes Maryland currently imports more than 40 percent of its electricity from out-of-state plants. The proposed plant would begin operating in 2017, providing enough energy to serve 390,000 homes.

Old Dominion says it provides wholesale power to 11 distribution cooperatives in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware that serve about 1.2 million people.
