Richard Hug, GOP Fundraiser, Dead At 78

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The chair of the Maryland Republican Party says longtime GOP fundraiser Richard Hug has died.

Diana Waterman announced Hug's death in a statement on Tuesday.

Waterman says the 78-year-old Arnold resident raised more than $20 million for the Republican gubernatorial campaigns of Ellen Sauerbrey and Bob Ehrlich. She notes that Hug also raised money for a wide range of Republican Senate and legislative candidates.

Waterman says Hug served on the University System of Maryland's Board of Regents and the boards of the National Aquarium and the Duke University School of the Environment. He died on Saturday.
