WHITEFORD, Md. (WJZ) — An ATV crash in Howard County sent an 11-year-old boy to the hospital.

The boy crashed his vehicle into a tree in the 4400 block of Slate Ridge Road in Whiteford. The accident happened shortly after 1:15 p.m. Sunday.

He is in serious condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The boy’s father credits protective gear with saving his life. He was wearing a helmet and extensive padding, including a neck brace and chest protector.

He says a throttle malfunction is to blame for the accident.
