O's 3B Machado Relieved After 'Terrifying Moment'

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Orioles third baseman Manny Machado hopes to avoid surgery on his injured left knee after enduring a "terrifying moment' during Monday's game at Tampa Bay.

Machado was carted from the field after he stepped awkwardly on first base and crumbled to the ground.

But an MRI on Tuesday revealed no damage to any major ligaments.

He tore his medial patellofemoral ligament. Machado hopes rest and rehabilitation will repair the damage, but intends to get a second opinion Monday.

Machado, who is on crutches, said Wednesday, "Obviously, when it first happened, it was a terrifying moment for myself, all the fans and my teammates. Obviously, it wasn't fun, but ... it was much better what we expected it was."

Machado was placed on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday.
