Md. Expands Scrap Tire Collection Program

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The state of Maryland is pumping more money into scrap tire collection.

The Board of Public Works on Thursday added $1.5 million to the $500,000 it approved for the project in May.

The funding will reimburse counties that collect scrap tires through citizen and agricultural drop-off days.

The Maryland Department of the Environment says all 20 participating counties must now accept farm vehicle tires as well as tires from passenger vehicles.

In the past, some counties did not accept agricultural tires.

The agency says scrap tires can create risks to the environment and public health. They are a fire hazard and provide habitat for disease carrying mosquitoes and rodents.
