Baltimore 8th Most Underrated City For Young People

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore--underrated? That's what a business and technology site is saying about Charm City.

As Christie Ileto explains, it's ranked the eighth most underrated city for young people.

Baltimore -- home to winning sports teams, movies like "Hairspray" and our crab cuisine-- was Wednesday named the eighth most underrated city for 20-somethings by Business Insider. It's a hidden gem locals have already discovered.

"I like the nightlife. I like where I live. There's a lot of students there and the shopping's not bad, either," said Emma Rutter.

"If you're a foodie, there's a lot to eat here and quite enough places to hang out," said Hadik Chhatrala.

Rankings are based on large music venues and bars per capita, the number of single people, access to public transit and cost of living. The author wrote Baltimore has "good public transportation and a large single population."

"Our nightlife is great. We obviously have great sports teams so there's a lot going on here," said Megan Isennock, Downtown Partnership.

And Baltimore's in good company, ranking higher than cities like Miami and Washington, D.C., and tying with New York.

"It's kind of exciting to see people understand why so many people outside the city are moving into the city," said Isennock.

Wednesday's list comes after Baltimore was named--for the second year in a row--as the seventh most dangerous city in the U.S. But even with that unfavorable mark, this latest ranking is one that spotlights the best of Baltimore that many don't know about.

The city of Philadelphia topped this year's list.

Business Insider says they conducted this study because too often cities are ranked by quality of life metrics and rarely focus on their young demographic.
