Pedestrian Struck By Trooper Dies On I-68 In Garrett County

GRANTSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police say a trooper fatally struck a truck driver who was running across the traffic lanes of Interstate 68 near Grantsville.

Police say Lamont Scaife, 39, of Orlando died from injuries he suffered late Tuesday night.

State police say the driver had parked his disabled tractor-trailer on the shoulder near Chestnut Ridge Road. His passenger told police the driver  opened the driver's side door and piece of paper blew onto the highway.

The witness told police the driver chased the paper across the traffic lanes and into the path of a patrol car driven by Trooper First Class Scott Bell, a 3 1/2-year veteran. Bell wasn't hurt.

The Maryland State Police CRASH team is reconstructing the incident as the investigation continues.
