Driver Dies After Truck Separates From Trailer, Falls From I-95 Overpass & Ignites

ELKRIDGE, Md. (WJZ) -- A driver was killed after his truck went over the I-95 overpass near I-895 on the Baltimore County-Howard County line.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Maryland State Police say a 2005 Ford truck towing a trailer was traveling southbound on I-95 in the area of the Patapsco River Bridge.

Police say for some reason the Ford truck and the trailer separated. The truck struck the bridge embankment on the right side before going over the embankment.

The truck fell over the bridge to the park below and caught on fire, killing the driver. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.  He has not been identified.

The trailer came to rest on I-95 blocking the right two lanes.

Due to the severity of the crash, troopers closed southbound I-95 in the area of the Baltimore/Howard County line for several hours. Highway engineers inspected the bridge and made necessary repairs.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time. The investigation continues.

Maryland State Police are handling the investigation and speaking to witnesses. Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is asked to contact the Maryland State Police Golden Ring Barracks at 410- 780-2700.
