Maryland Cemetery Celebrating 250th Anniversary

REISTERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A cemetery in Reisterstown is celebrating its 250th anniversary.

The Reisterstown Community Cemetery was founded in 1764 by John Reister, Reistertown's founder. A German immigrant, he operated an inn, and when he died in 1804 he was buried at the cemetery.

On Saturday, officials and residents are celebrating the cemetery's 250th anniversary as well as the installation of two new iron entrance gates. Actors dressed in historic costumes will portray some of the cemetery's residents.

The cemetery is the final resting place of veterans from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 as well as Confederate and Union soldiers. There cemetery says it has over 500 gravestones and over 800 documented burials.
