Inner Harbor To Host Almost 3 Dozen Ships

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- From sail to high-tech fighting vessels, the Inner Harbor is hosting 33 ships over the next week. But getting those vessels to come here and finding room for them has been underway for months.

Christie Ileto looks at what it takes to make it work.

They're easy to spot and hard to ignore. Tall ships are the newest gems in the harbor.

"They're big and have a lot of flags," said Collin Lee.

Inquiring minds want the specifics about the Kalmar Nykel.

"The fact that this ship is made out of wood and that it really does sail and that we do use our sails," said first mate Luke Snyder.

The antique vessel sailed from Delaware for the Star Spangled Spectacular.

"I think it's keeping history alive," Snyder said.

A history that started in Baltimore for the US Navy.

"We really came of age as a Navy during the War of 1812," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

A towering force, the USNS Choctaw County shows how the Navy's evolved.

"The people of Baltimore get to see their sailors and marines, get to see the ships operate and the one thing I want to ask people when you see a sailor or a marine, go take a selfie," said Mabus.

Still, it's the ships, the sails and the living history sitting at our fingertips that's got Baltimore buzzing.

All the maneuvering gets repeated next Tuesday, when the ships leave Baltimore.
