Dan Duquette On Losing Cruz, Markakis, Miller And More

Baltimore Orioles Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn and Femi Ayanbadejo to talk about losing the birds big three free agents. Scott asked Dan if he has ever seen a quick moving market has he has this year in terms of players coming off the board. "There's a lot of money in the market and that's driving deals too happen pretty quickly. And the players are signing a little bit quicker than they have in the past."

Nelson Cruz inked himself a deal with the Seattle Mariners (4 years 57 million); Dan spoke about when he knew the Orioles would struggle retaining the right-handed slugger. "I knew we were going to have trouble making a deal with Nelson Cruz when the Tigers gave four years to Victor Martinez. That hadn't been done before; a team hadn't given a player at that stage of his career a four year deal. So I knew it was going to be tough to get Nelson for a three year deal."

Long time Oriole Nick Markakis has left the club for Atlanta after agreeing to a 4 year 44 million dollar deal with the Braves. They deal was viewed by many as a certainty to get done, however health issues raised flag. News broke early Friday afternoon that Nick is leaning to having surgery to repair a bulging disc in his neck. Dan was limited on what he could say, but he did acknowledge that the O's new about the issue. "I can tell you that the club was aware of the condition that you just mentioned (Neck), and those are always a cause for concern."
