It Could Take Years To Replace Faulty Takata Airbags

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--What's being called the largest and most complex auto recall in history could take years to remove potentially faulty airbags from millions of cars.

The maker of the air bag, Takata, says some repaired cars will need another replacement.

Marcus Washington has the latest.

There are millions of drivers who now know they sit in front of a recalled-- potentially deadly airbag--- but can't do anything about it.

"I tried to make an appointment for my car because of the recall and that's when they told me there wasn't going to be any appointments available until November," one consumer said.

Takata says they are prioritizing replacements in high humidity areas, since they believe moisture is the cause airbag ruptures.

In some cases Takata airbags deploy with excessive force.

So far 6 deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide are linked to the airbags.

"We have ordered over probably 200-300 airbags at this point that are still on back order. We could have a whole department devoted to the airbag recall at this point."

For those who can't get replacement parts or don't even know their car is part of the recall, it will be a long wait.

As letters go out to warn divers of the potential problem, another headache for those who believed they were in the clear.

"Your dealer should be able to tell you whether they have a fix that is long term or they have interim remedy. Ok, so even if someone gets it fixed, they might not really have it fixed? And the dealer better make that clear."
