Car Races Returning To Western Maryland Airport

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Timed automobile races are resuming at the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport after a one-year break to address safety concerns.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the two-day autocross event begins Saturday. The airport is in Wiley Ford, West Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Cumberland.

The Potomac Highlands Airport Authority voted last year to deny the group access for fear of losing Federal Aviation Administration funds. Organizers say those concerns have been addressed.

The autocross group began holding timed races on the airport tarmac in 2003.

The airport does not have scheduled commercial passenger service but is used by business planes and other small aircraft.
