Baltimore Prosecutor: Violence Not Linked To Freddie Gray
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore's top prosecutor says she doesn't think the city's increase in violent crime is connected to the rioting that followed the death of Freddie Gray in police custody.
The Baltimore Sun reports that State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby said during the taping of a news program that she believes past city policies have contributed to a "cyclical" increase in crime. She cited the "zero-tolerance" policies implemented under former mayor Martin O'Malley, who left that office in 2007.
There had been 65 homicides in Baltimore as of April 25, the first day of unrest after Gray's death. From April 25 through the end of August, 158 people were slain in the city, including 45 in July alone.
Mosby said violence was already trending upward.
