Roch Kubatko Breaks Down Davis Deal

Roch Kubatko with MASN Sports joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to talk about the big news over the weekend; the Chris Davis signing.

Chris Davis resigned with the Orioles on Saturday to a 7 year deal worth 161 million dollars. It has been reported that $42 million of that contract will be deferred over the next 20 years. Roch breaks down the deal, "I believe he's only going to get $17 million each of the next six years so it's spread out and that works for them. It's not you know $22-23 million a year. They did have to include an opt-out, it's a limited no-trade not a full no-trade; so there are a lot of things they like about this and yeah, it's going to be spread over the next 22 years that he will get paid, kind of like a Bobby Bonilla deal. But it isn't outrageous and they're obviously comfortable with it. I think it works for both sides; it clearly works for Chris or he wouldn't of accepted it and Peter Angelos more than anyone else in this organization wanted to re-sign Chris Davis. Others were ready to move on months ago, he was starting to lean in that direction more than any point but not enough to refuse Scott Boras' call."

Jeremy Conn later asked Roch how this contract will effect the rest of the Orioles roster with holes that still need to be filled in free agency. "I think they can certainly make a smaller move. I'm not sure how much more they can spend because of that contract but I think there are still ways to go ahead and bring some guys in. I think Dexter Fowler makes a lot of sense in right field as a lead-off guy but he costs you a pick. He was looking for 4-years or projected to get 4 years at the beginning of free agency so I'm not sure if that would work."
