Snow Causes Several Buildings To Collapse Across Md.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Recovering from the blizzard of 2016 has been challenging for a lot of people--from digging their cars out to clearing the snow off walkways.

Marcus Washington with more on a danger many people are missing during the cleanup process.

Walking outside, you can see the impact of the blizzard, but what many people often forget is the damage the snow can cause to areas you don't often see--like on the roof of a building.

From Sky Eye Chopper 13, you can see the damage caused as pounds of snow poured onto our region, causing roofs ro collapse.

The Paul Reed Smith Guitars building on the Eastern Shore is where one gaping hole sits.

A porch roof collapsed in White Marsh onto a woman Sunday, sending her to the hospital in serious condition.

And a porch in Hampden along Falls Road is where three homes are impacted by the heavy snow.

"And when I saw that, I got me and all of my guys, we got right to the roof here and started clearing it out and de-icing it as quick as we could," said David Scherr, K&S Associates.

David Scherr was out early Monday morning with the sun trying to prevent what happened to his neighbor from happening to his business.

"It starts to put weight on the ceiling and the roof and it collapses, and we can't have that," he said.

Scherr says, obviously, they're not able to clear off all the snow on top of the roof, but the important part is to clear a path to allow the melting snow to rush over into the scupper boxes, pouring off the roof.

"If the roof collapses, then I can't do any work on any vehicles because the roof is in the middle of the shop then. I can't do anything. All my employees can't come to work. And I've got to clear it out or else it won't work. I've got to clear them out. I've got to get the weight off the roof," said Scherr.

There was also a Safeway grocery store in Bel Air, where part of its roof collapsed. No one was hurt.
