Brian McFarland Breaks Down Ravens Salary Cap

Brian McFarland with the Russell Street Report joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn today to discuss the latest Ravens roster moves and their effect on the salary cap.

The Ravens have been busy since the start of free agency. Signing veterans like Ben Watson, Mike Wallace and Eric Weddle to add experience to the roster. Brian talks about how those deals got done, "The key to that was getting Flacco's deal done to create some cap space and then obviously re-doing Jimmy Smith and Marshall Yanda (contracts) allowed them to create the necessary cap space."

The Ravens had a plethora of Safeties coming into today and after the signing of Eric Weddle, everyone was wondering who the Ravens would cut to make room for Weddle. They ended up releasing Will Hill today, saving them about $2.84 million in cap space. Later after Brian's interview, it was discovered Hill will be suspended for the first 10 games of the 2016 season after violating the leagues substance abuse policy. Brian talked about the move and compared the cap hits of a Will Hill release vs a Lardarius Webb release, "You knew something was coming with all the safeties. It would seemingly of had to be Webb or Hill...Webb is certainly the more expensive proposition. They could of saved more this year (by cutting Webb). He would of been $3.5 million, Hill was actually a little over three but the dead money for Webb is $6.6 million. So that may be why they kept him around."
