Several Students Injured In Baltimore School Bus Crash

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A school bus accident sent more than a dozen kids to the hospital after a car slammed into the side of it. It happened along Perring Parkway, leaving parts of the road closed during the busy rush hour.

Rick Ritter has the latest on the students' injuries and reaction from frantic parents.

The 14 Baltimore City students were released from the hospital; they're all expected to be ok.

The frightening accident could've easily been tragic.

"My heart skipped several beats," said parent Maranda Hairston, who has a child in Monarch Academy's seventh grade. "I was petrified."

A car was pinned underneath of a school bus with more than a dozen kids on board.

"I saw the bus stopped there and car underneath. I started praying," said Edith Brown, who lives nearby.

The call came in around 3:30 Thursday afternoon along the 53-hundred block of Perring Parkway. Police say the bus from Monarch Academy was turning onto Perring Parkway when it collided with a Ford Fusion that t-boned it, injuring close to 20 people.

The Baltimore City fire department quickly responded. Fourteen students and two adults on the bus were all taken to the hospital with minor injuries; three adults inside the car were transported in serious condition.

"Very scary situation but our units did a good job showing up to the scene fast and getting on the bus," said Samuel Johnson, fire department.

After seeing the aftermath in person, parents find it hard to believe their children were ok.

"There's a car that's literally under the bus," Hairston said.

Those who live nearby say Perring Parkway looks like a racecourse at times and claim accidents like that are close to happening far too often.

"I've been here since 1976 and it keeps getting worse," said Jennifer Francis, who lives nearby.

Southbound lanes of Perring Parkway were closed for more than two hours. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
