2 Dead In Police-Involved Shooting At Elkton Hotel

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Two people, a man and a woman, were shot and killed by police at the New Eastern Inn in Elkton Tuesday.

Police say they are believed to be 25-year-old fugitives from the Dover area who were wanted on felony warrants for possession of firearms in Delaware.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said Delaware State Police requested assistance in tracking down the suspects Monday.

Shortly before 10 a.m. this morning, he said, members of the State Apprehension Team -- made up today of members of the Maryland State Police and the Cecil County Sheriff's Office -- approached the door of a room on the second floor of the inn, where they believed the fugitives were hiding out.

They knocked, identified themselves and demanded the suspects surrender, Shipley said. An officer said a man inside the room was seen through the window picking up a handgun and walking towards the door. Officers retreated.

When the door opened, the suspect raised the handgun and refused to obey the commands of the officers, Shipley said. The officers fired on him. Seconds later, a female suspect came out with a handgun and also refused orders. Police fired on her, too.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

It is not yet known how many shots were fired by police.

No officers were injured.

Route 40 between Delaware Avenue and Route 213 was closed as police activity surrounded the area, but has since been reopened.

This is a developing story.
