Local GBMC Nurse Gains National Recognition; "America's Most Amazing Nurse"

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- GBMC nurse Laura Clary was named "America's Most Amazing Nurse" by Prevention Magazine and the Doctors Television Show.

She cares for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

The nationwide search for the competition launched last November and votes poured in from all over the country to select Clary as "America's Most Amazing Nurse."

Caring for a vulnerable population.

Laura Clary is a sexual assault forensic nurse examiner who treats victims of sexual assault, rape, human trafficking even domestic violence.

"Being able to be there and hold their hand and listen to them believe them and provide a service not a lot of places offer is really incredible," Clary said.

Clary sees more than 400 cases a year at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Baltimore.

"She does the forensic testing, and the samples she collects, she works with criminal investigators and law enforcement to bring the victim's perpetrators to justice," said Dr. Joann Z. Ioannou, chief nursing officer at GBMC.

Since 2010, Clary has been helping victims suffering from a traumatic experience. Clary's colleagues are proud to see her recognized.

"She has the incredible skill set of interpersonal and training and education, and she understands the science and research behind forensic nursing, to accomplish what she does every day," Ioannou said.

Being named America's Most Amazing Nurse is an honor Clary said would not be possible without her team of forensic nurses and victim advocates.

"I work with a team of amazing nurses, amazing forensic nurses, that really make my job so much easier and I appreciate each and every one of those nurses for the hard work and their dedication and their passion, for this field," Clary said.

Clary was nominated by her husband. She was also voted the magazine's fan favorite.

The competition also made a donation to Clary's charity of choice, she selected the Baltimore County Child Advocacy Center.
