Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, they say, and it’s so well-regarded that many restaurants are devoted entirely to just breakfast. Breakfast tends to be dominated by carbs, starches and fats, though, making it a minefield for a health-conscious person. Fortunately for healthy Baltimoreans, there are a few restaurants that offer quality, flavor and nutrition on the menu. Consider a few of these venues for your morning meals while in Charm City.

One World Cafe is a vegan juice bar, but the food it serves is flavorful enough to meet the standard of all types of eaters. If you happen to have any food allergies or intolerances, One World is a prime stop, since there are gluten-free and dairy-free options. When it comes to breakfast, One World offers your full line of cafe beverages, and you can get your pick of juice smoothies, as well.
The breakfast favorite at the cafe is the House Omelette, which serves up a healthy vegetarian omelette with tomatoes, baby spinach, sprouts and cheese. This comes with a side of home fries and toast. Other healthy breakfast sides include the fakin’ bacon and the meatless sausage.

The Silver Diner harkens back to the nostalgic days of corner diners, which gives it an attractive morning atmosphere to begin with. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that the breakfast menu is 24-hour, making breakfast an all-the-time meal.
At the top of the menu sit the farm-fresh omelette options. Never a remarkably unhealthy choice, patrons have the option to make the omelettes even healthier by opting in for an egg substitute, which would include cholesterol-free eggs or egg whites. The griddle menu sports an assortment of pancake and french toast options, each of which includes tasty fruit garnishes, which add color and flavor. Even the greasy breakfast meats, like sausage and bacon, have been afforded some healthy alternatives on the ala carte menu.

Sweet 27 brings global fare local in a healthy fusion cafe and bakery. You can expect to see such international favorites as Asian and Caribbean foods along with delicious, gluten-free baked goods. It also doesn’t hurt that the establishment has cultivated a relaxed and casual atmosphere in which to enjoy this eclectic mixture of foods. As far as a healthy breakfast goes, consider the omelette menu at the cafe which includes such healthy treats as the Ranchero Omelette, the Caprese Omelette and for spicy food fans: the Spice Indian. Not in the mood for eggs? Grab a gluten-free muffin from the bakery in one of a number of delicious flavors.

Cafe EZ in Ellicott City is no greasy spoon, putting out high-quality coffee, baked goods and meals. The breakfast and brunch menus have a decent variety. You can grab the EZ breakfast which gives you the essentials: pancake or French toast, berries, egg, potato and the meat of your choice. Go for the turkey sausage for maximum health. The Sassy Breakfast gives you a variation on the EZ, but with plenty of spice, and the option of tofu for a healthy alternative. EZ also has an extensive breakfast sandwich and crepe menu.

The Argosy Cafe is a family run business with house roasted coffee and a liquor license. For breakfast, swing in and consider the unique breakfast sandwiches that Argosy calls “twirls.” The unique thing about the Twirl is the bread: challah style with an onion swirl, the Twirl bread is toasted to the style of Texas Toast. Healthy Twirl options include the Fresh Roasted Turkey and Mushrooms, or the Feta Spinach and Roasted Tomatoes. For an alternative, Argosy offers greek yogurt with crunchy granola, or steel cut oatmeal with raisin and cinnamon swirl.
