Maryland Inmate Killed Inside Prison Cell, Charges Pending

JESSUP, Md. (AP) — Homicide investigators say they expect to file murder charges after an inmate's death inside a maximum security prison in Maryland.

Maryland State Police say they are investigating the apparent murder of 44-year-old David I. Stephenson in his Jessup Correctional Institution cell early Friday. Investigators say they've identified a fellow inmate as a suspect, but his name is being withheld until charges are filed.

Stephenson was found on the floor of the locked cell he shared with another man suffering from trauma injuries. Prison officials say they pushed into the cell around 3 a.m. Friday after a correctional officer found the window into the space covered.

State police say a motive for the death wasn't clear.
