Toddler Grazed, Man Wounded In SW Baltimore Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Two people were injured in a shooting in SW Baltimore, including a toddler, police say.

A car in the circle at Sinai Hospital sat with bullet holes in the back.

Baltimore City Police said a man pulled up there after someone shot him on Amberley Ave. near Beechfield in west Baltimore.

A 19-month-old baby that was with him was grazed by a bullet.

"It's a shame," said one local resident.  "It's a total shame for anyone whether you're a parent or not when you hear about it. It just breaks your heart."

The child was later taken to Johns Hopkins Children's Center.

According to police, moments before the shooting Wednesday afternoon, the 21-year-old victim had been arguing with someone.

No suspects have been named.

"Oh my God, it's just crazy," said one resident. "This is a pretty quiet neighborhood, so I'm pretty shocked. Especially with a child involved."

Just a few streets over, the 4900 block of Frederick Ave. was the scene for the first homicide for 2019. Residents are concerned the crime is creeping over their neighborhood.

One resident said that their view of the block had changed.

"Definitely," said the resident. "Definitely you are going to be more aware, more cautious.

As the city grapples with crime control, there is a sigh of relief that the 19-month-old baby escaped more serious injuries.

"It's unacceptable, you know," said Dora Bradford. "But what can we do other than continue to pray for people?"

Last year, two young sisters were shot in Baltimore in separate incidents.

One of the girls, 7-year-old Taylor Hayes died.
