ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- The Capital Gazette was awarded a 2019 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation.

The gazette lost five of its staffers after a gunman opened fire inside their Annapolis newsroom on June 28, 2018.

The Gazette responded to the honor on Twitter.

"The Pulitzer Prize Board awarded a special citation to the staff of the Capital Gazette for their work covering the attack last June on the newsroom that killed five employees -- Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters," the newspaper tweeted.
