Maryland Workgroup On Education Funding To Meet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A workgroup that is considering increases to Maryland's funding formula for education is scheduled to meet.

A state analyst is scheduled to provide an overview on the state and local share of teacher retirement costs at Thursday's meeting. A consultant is slated to review cost assumptions for teacher salaries.

The General Assembly approved legislation this year to begin implementing recommendations made by the Kirwan Commission. It included funds to raise teacher pay and implement programs to help low-income and special education students.

Full implementation of the recommendation is estimated to cost about $3.8 billion per year, to be phased in over a decade.

Supporters say the plan aims to make Maryland schools among the best in the world, but critics point to a lack of plans to pay for it.
