BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Baltimore City Police Department is welcoming 47 new trainees to the police academy.

The department said this is one of the biggest recruit classes in awhile.

Mayor Jack Young and Commissioner Michael Harrison spoke to the men and women of the class.

The trainees will now go through a 27-week course.

If you’re interested, the department said they’re still hiring.

Two cadets also started their careers this week.

Looks pretty white- the racial make up of the police should approximate that of the citizens. Over 60% of residents are black and half are female- does that bunch of recruits look like that?

What’s your take on the racial make up of the NBA/NFL. It is no where representative of the racial makeup in the US. This is a trainee program you have no idea if most of the whites drop out or if most of the Asians drop out. It’s possible many African Americans in the city fear repercussions from their own communities of being a cop the way the communities in the city treat cops. Look at the leaders in the city that never have the cops back especially the AG. All 47 in my opinion deserve respect for wanting to police this crime ridden city no matter what their race. So tell us why the color of ones skin is important here Racist.

Well said. Is the problem that there aren’t enough black applicants who qualify? Will black communities respect only the black officers? Please explain to me how self imposed segregation and inclusion is even remotely logical.
