Delaware Man Who Died In Maryland Troopers' Custody IDed
CENTREVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Maryland prosecutors on Wednesday identified a Delaware motorist who died last week after becoming unresponsive in a state police barracks cell after his arrest.
The Office of the Attorney General identified the man as Armar Womack, 64, of Delaware, according to a news release. In keeping with a state law approved last year, the Independent Investigations Division will examine Womack's death.
Troopers conducting a traffic stop Friday night arrested Womack and accused him of possession of a controlled substance, according to news releases. He was conscious and responsive to questions at the time of his arrest, according to authorities.
Womack was taken to the Maryland State Police barrack in Centreville and placed in a cell. About two hours after he arrived at the barracks, Womack began "exhibiting signs of distress and became unresponsive," officials said. Troopers intervened and notified emergency medical services, which took him to a hospital where he died shortly before midnight, according to state police.
There is some camera footage, according to officials, which the Independent Investigations Division generally can release within 14 days of an incident.
The officers involved Maryland State Police employees, but the division said it isn't releasing their names at this point because of security concerns.
