Gail Bending has been WJZ's news director for 30 years. She moved to Maryland when she was 13 years old and never wanted to live anywhere else.

Bending knew she wanted to be a journalist when she started a weekly newspaper in elementary school and later wrote for her high school and college newspapers.

When her mother encouraged her to intern at a Baltimore TV station, she soon realized that's where she wanted to be.

Telling people's stories is why she got into the business and now she appreciates how easily people can now be connected to WJZ through social media. She believes that connection is what keeps a station strong.

Gail lives in Baltimore County with her daughter. They love walking dogs on the NCR trail in all kinds of weather and appreciate the change of seasons. They love animals and care for fish, guinea pigs, dogs, a bird and a horse.

Gail earned a master's degree in teaching from UMUC, a B.S. in Mass Communications from Towson University, and attended Harford Community College after three years of high school.

Her advice to anyone who wants to get into this field is to intern and experience a newsroom firsthand.
