Best Bars In Baltimore To Watch The NFL's Opening Games

Football season is the most exciting time of the year. Not only does it coincide with some favorite American holidays, but the opening games are holidays unto themselves. Much like with the holidays, no one wants to watch the opening games alone. The best atmosphere in which to participate in these festivities includes giant televisions, lots of beer and possibly some hot wings or fries. In other words, a sports bar. Here are the best places in Baltimore to watch the games.
Mother's Federal Hill Grille
1113 S. Charles St.
Baltimore, MD 21230
(410) 244-8686
www.mothersgrille.com

Mother's was named one of the top 25 Sports Bars in the country by Sporting News Magazine. Little wonder, considering its 20 HD flatscreen TVs and portable radios available at every table. But the crowning glory of Mother's is the Purple Patio. Mother's is located only a short walk from the M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens. Before and after every home game, Mother's hosts an enormous tailgating party in their football-themed parking lot. Come down before the Ravens play and enjoy the grill, DJ and the two bars which Mother's has on-site to celebrate all morning — then take the party inside to watch the actual game. Not a Ravens fan? The great drinks, food and HD TVs still make this an ideal location to catch an opening game.

No Idea Tavern
1649 S. Hanover St.
Baltimore, MD 21230
(410) 685-4332

Somehow, No Idea Tavern manages to be larger on the inside than it looks on the outside. No Idea offers 17 large TVs, free WiFi and all-you-can drink specials on game days. The food is not bar food, but actual food from a full menu and a well-staffed kitchen. Although it is every bit a sports bar, the staff is dedicated, veteran and committed to its customers. This makes the atmosphere of the bar warm and inviting, and far from obnoxious unlike many other sports bars in the area. The bar also has comfortable chairs in which to recline before or after the game and play games like shuffleboard.

Cowboys And Rednecks
1117 S. Charles St.
Baltimore, MD 21230
(410) 223-2269
cnrpub.com

Packin' beer, country music, down-home eats, and 17 whoppin' LED TVs for game time, Cowboys and Rednecks is the country bar for football fans. In addition to the LED TVs, there's an enormous projection television. When the opening game is on, the music stops and things get serious as the bar knuckles down for football. Offering buckets of bottled beer during games, you can also order the various shots and mixed drinks at the bar. Be sure to check out their wings, or, if you want a meal, the steaks, po' boys and other country foods on the menu that have made this bar a hit.

Baltimore Taphouse
600 S. Potomac St.
Baltimore, MD 21224
(410) 276-7553

Sometimes you don't want to catch an opening game at a loud and crowded sports bar. If so, Baltimore Taphouse is the place for you. By all appearances, the Taphouse is a quiet corner pub, but sports are a big deal here, and they have seven plasma TVs in the bar to display the games. The Taphouse is committed to local flair, and keeps a rotating line of local craft beers on tap, so while enjoying NFL games, patrons can also enjoy Baltimore flavor.

If you're interested in fewer crowds, friendly and committed servers, and great beer while watching games close to a big TV, the Taphouse is where you need to be.

Pickles Pub
520 Washington Blvd.
Baltimore, MD 21230
(410) 752-1784
www.picklespub.com

Known for its craft beers and its signature deep-fried pickles, the pub of the same name is packed to the gills on game days for good reason. Known since 1988 as the place for sports fans, game days at Pickles frequently spill out of the bar and turn into street parties. While they are usually associated most closely with the Orioles, Pickles' big screen TVs, bar foods (like their delicious crab pretzel) and game-day spirit has made it an ideal place to watch NFL opening games, as well.
