Md. GOP Fares Well In Local Elections

BALTIMORE (AP) -- This month's defeat of former governor Robert Ehrlich seemed to spell a low point for Republicans in Maryland.

But the GOP fared much better at the local level, picking up three dozen positions in local government and courthouses across the state.

Starting next month, 15 of Maryland's 23 counties will be run at the local level by Republicans and nine won't have a single Democrat in their governing body.

Chris Cavey, a former Baltimore County Republican chairman, says "the best hope for the county is in the local offices."

Republican blogger Richard Cross describes the GOP's success at the local level as "Maryland's red underbelly."

Ehrlich was the state's first Republican governor in a generation but he lost badly to Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley in his bid to regain his old job.
