President Of Maryland Public Television To Retire

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) -- The president and CEO of Maryland Public Television is stepping down. 

Robert Shuman has informed the Maryland Public Broadcasting Commission and MPT staff that he plans to retire in June. 

Shuman came to MPT in the mid-1990s after founding The Learning Channel and running it for 10 years before its sale to Discovery Communications. He intended to stay at MPT around three years, but ended up leading the station for nearly 15 years. 

Shuman says in a statement that his time at MPT was "uniquely rewarding" and that he plans to help with the search for his successor. 

During his tenure, MPT switched to digital broadcasting and began offering three program channels, including one in high definition.
