Maryland Senate Plans To Debate Gay Marriage

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Senate plans to begin debating a gay marriage bill and could vote on it next week.

Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller said Tuesday that the Senate will begin debating the bill on Wednesday, and it could take all day. Miller says he has asked lawmakers to act "gentlemanlike" and "ladylike" as they consider the measure.

He said there could be a full vote on the bill next Tuesday.

The bill was approved by a Senate committee last week and has the stated support of 24 senators -- the minimum needed for passage.

If approved, Maryland would become the sixth state to legalize gay marriage.
