Bill Reduces Phosphorus In Commercial Dish Soap
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland has already reduced the amount of phosphorus allowed in domestic dishwashing detergent to reduce pollution. This year, lawmakers in Annapolis are working to reduce it in commercial dishwashing soap.
The Maryland Senate voted 46-0 on Tuesday for a measure to limit phosphorous in commercial dishwashing detergent to 0.5 percent by weight after 2013. The bill now heads to the House of Delegates.
Phosphorus runoff is blamed for polluting the Chesapeake Bay.
Sen. Karen Montgomery, the bill sponsor, says a number of companies make low-phosphorus detergent for commercial machines.
