Ex-Hagerstown Man Accused Of Rape Returned To Md.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a former Hagerstown man accused of raping a woman in Washington County in 2000 has been extradited to Maryland from the Czech Republic.

Assistant State's Attorney Joe Michael said Monday Klaus Werner Vonmahr, 51, was booked at the Washington County Detention Center late Friday. He's been charged of first-degree rape and other offenses and is being held without bond. A preliminary hearing is set for April 19.

Records show that a woman told Maryland State Police on Nov. 30, 2000, that Vonmahr, a German national, became angry with her during an argument, hit and choked the woman, shoved pills into her mouth and sexually assaulted her.

Michael said Vonmahr was arrested in the Czech Republic on Oct. 22, 2010, after applying for a driver's license.
