Ice Hockey Is Coming To Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Baltimore City leaders announced the Washington Capitals will host a game at 1st Mariner Arena.

Kai Jackson reports the big announcement comes as some say the arena needs to be replaced.

An NHL event may not bring hockey back to Baltimore or save the 1st Mariner Arena, but fans of the game think on both counts, it’s a good start.

There was big news in Baltimore on Monday and it meant a lot at the Stackhouse  Bar in Canton.  Signs outside the door on Hudson Street alert patrons that while the O’s and Ravens are popular, they also like their Caps.

“Hockey’s…great for business,” said Stackhouse Bar owner Dominic DeSantis.

That’s why people are so happy about the Washington Capitals coming to Baltimore this year.

“I’m excited,” said Alan Viars.

The Greater Baltimore Committee has recommended that a new arena be constructed in the city.  In 2008, the estimated cost was $300 million.

The Capitals will take on the Nashville Predators in September’s pre-season matchup.

Did he said that we don’t need a new arena? Please… The ‘Baltimore Civic Center’ building is older than Madison Square Garden.

    1. Leroy J. Bright says:

Baltimore DOES need a new arena. The current Madison Square Garden in New York was opened in 1968, and the Baltimore Civic Center opened in 1962. If we don’t get a new arena soon, we might as well forget about major indoor attractions, (not just indoor sports in winter) EVER coming to Baltimore again! and furthermore, lots of people around here (Greater Baltimore Metropolitan Area) aren’t able to make trips to Washington’s Verizon Center to see the indoor events that an arena holds.

It would be great to have the arena rebuilt! It is simply too small to host many events: motorcross, monster trucks, concerts, etc. Going there now you realize just how small the place is watching these events. The halls are so narrow that you cannot even walk through, and forget it for those in wheelchairs. The seats are so close together that there is not even enough leg room for a 4 year old, much less an adult. It would be nice to have it rebuilt so we can compete with other facilities so we get the better events here in Baltimore.

  4. bernie says:

Yeah, welcome downtown where your car will be stolen, towed or set on fire while when you come out, you will be car-jacked, mugged or your wife /girl friend raped by Baltimore’s best Brothers.

    Bring back Baltimore hockey !!

  6. Soddy Sillipot says:

fbrice That has nothing to do with hockey
Leroy You dont what your talking about!
Dawn N you dont know what you’re talking about either!
    Mike L Jr Nice attitude!
Bernie your a nothing but a low life racist!
    Joe M Nice attutude
Its about Hockey people! C’MON MAN!!!!!

    1. Leroy J. Bright says:

Soddy, YOU don’t know what you’re talking about, MAN!!!!!!!! This is more than just about hockey, it’s building a first-class state-of-the-art facility that will host a great deal of large-scale “name” events. The Baltimore Hockey Classic is simply just that, A FIRST STEP toward that goal. I’m as much as having for a strong desire for Baltimore Hockey as you, maybe more so in a desire for a pro team here, but in order to attract these events, we need a new facility to host these events, and a building the size of the 1st Mariner Arena isn’t going to cut it. So DON’T YOU DARE try to tell me that I don’t know what I’m talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Bernie says:

Soddy, Your a silly youngster that either hasn’t been slammed in the ass by greedy sports or you are just a manical a…hole who will put up with anything because you must live out your silly dreams vicariously through athletes. Bet you would smell their jock straps & pay for it too….Listen up sonny boy. I may be a racist & I have good reason so on to the next subject which is that everything has ramifications in life. A downtown arean isn’t ever gonna bring a low class small city like B’more with the big dogs. You a…holes will get raped by the city with tax increases to pay for a venue which you will never be able to go to & afford to take your family such as the Ravens. You & I paid for that dic head! Where is the ROI?

  8. Mandy says:

The last time I was at a hockey game was in 1992. I still recall the
Baltimore SkipJacks. I love Hockey. I hope this work good so we can get a new better arena.

    1. Daiy says:

Steve, I hate the Pens, but I’m glad to see we agree on everything else. Anything to help draw positive attention to Charm City is a plus!

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE ICE RINK IS ASSEMBLED CLOSER TO THE STAGE.YOU CANNOT SEE THE GOAL GAGE WHEN SITTING UPSTAIRS OR LOWER CONCORSE AFTER THE FIRST 4 ROWS OF SEATING OPOSITE THE STAGE END OF THE RINK. MANY PEOPLE WILL BE VERY DISSAPOINTED IF THEY BUY THOSE SEATS AND THEY CAN’T SEE ALEX OVECHKIN SCORE ONE OF HIS AMAZING GOALS. THANKS TO THE CAPITALS ORGANIZATION FOR BRINGING THIS EVENT TO BALTIMORE. HOPEFULLY ONE DAY THE CLIPPERS WILL BE BACK IN TOWN,NOT THE SKIPJACKS. NOTHING LIKE THE ORIGNAL CLIPPER FIGHT SONG AFTER EVERY CLIPPER GOAL IS SCORED OR WHEN THE TEAM WHOULD COME BACK OUT ON THE ICE. I hope this brings to light the need for the new arena. No offense to our Beloved Civic Center/ Baltimore Arena/1st Mariner Arena, but its a dump. I worked for different two teams playing the the arena so I have seen the ins and outs of the building. Stories say that the NHL came to the arena many, many years ago and refused to put a full-fledged team in because it looked like a high school gym. Fortunately we were blessed with many years of the Skipjacks, Clippers, Blades, and Bandits.

  13. Jake says:

The idea here is to draw more fans from Baltimore to Washington. However, the big picture, as some of us on the facebook page have said, is to actually attract a team here, beit the AHL or ECHL. If there is a guarantee in place of the proposed new building connected to the convention center, then I am sure Baltimore will once again have hockey. Forget the NHL, aint going to happen. Embrace the sport and if it is the AHL, consider the fact that Cleveland, Houston, Charlotte, Chicago, Milwaukee and Toronto all have teams in that league. It’s no different than the ever changing indoor soccer league. And yes, they should be cslled the Clippers.
