3 Baltimore Artists To Receive Baker Artist Awards

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Their work is cutting edge, creative. Now the Baltimore artists producing it are getting recognition and cash.

Suzanne Collins introduces you to the winners of the Baker Artist awards.

It may seem a bit weird to some, to others earthy and experimental. Audrey Chen is a classically trained cellist who developed her own style. adding electronic sounds and voice.

"It's a kind of development of my own personal language, and it's a kind of story-telling without words," Chen said.

Chen is one of three Baker award winners, Baltimore artists who will receive $25,000 each. Visual artist Gary Kachadourian is another.

"I'm thrilled to win," Kachadourian said. "It is fantastic. It's like I can't believe I won it."

Kachadourian does precise drawings. Right now he's working on grass, which will be multiplied and printed to full-scale.

"So this is a section of cinder block wall. So you buy this poster. This is $10 and they're all very cheap and you want it to be something distributable," Kachadourian said.

More recently, Kachadourian is selling a book of cutouts for assembling, including spot-a-pots, a jersey wall, a tossed out couch and barrier blocks.

The third artist to win a Baker award is beat boxer Shodekeh.

All winners will be in a show in the fall at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Meanwhile, Audrey Chen will be performing 8 p.m. Wednesday at 2640 St. Paul Street at St. John's Church.
