WASHINGTON (AP) — A District of Columbia native has been chosen to lead one of the region’s largest private providers of services to those most in need.

The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington said in a release Monday that Monsignor John Enzler has been selected as the next president and chief executive of the organization. He begins his new duties on July 15.

Enzler was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Washington in 1973 and was named monsignor by Pope John Paul II in 1985. He has served at several parishes in the area, including the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda and Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac.

Catholic Charities serves more than 100,000 people in the Washington region each year.
