2 Metro Officers Scuffle With Man In Wheelchair

WASHINGTON (AP) —  A video posted on YouTube shows two Metro Transit police officers forcing a man in a wheelchair to the ground outside a Metro station, and the police chief has announced a formal review of the officers’ actions.

Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel says in a statement that the man, whose name has not been released, was drinking alcohol outside the U Street station last Thursday and refused to leave the area and accept a citation. He says the man resisted arrest and fell out of his wheelchair during the resulting scuffle with the officers.

Metro says the man was arrested for assault and drinking in public and was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

A spokesman says Metro Police Chief Michael Taborn has some concerns about what he saw in the video.

they r doing there job what dont think u can put an a- hole in a wheelchair hope u wake up tomorrow with 100 drunk wheelchair dwellers outside ur door

    1. joyce says:

shen, i hope you never become disable. i live in a building specially design for the disable person. their life is hard, facing all of the disadvantage in life, being made fun of, wanting to work but not able to master the task in keeping a job due to many situation that are way beyond that disable person personal capibities.

no one that have self pride want to accept a disability monthly check that they or their family member have earned just for them to be able to survive.

until you have walked in a disable person path way, then do your self a favor, show some respect to the disable people, because on day it could still be you or a love one when you less expect it to happen.

having a cold hard heart is worst then any cancer.
there is good and bad in all things in this life. so make the best of it. evil serves no purpose and it only kills some one positive spirit.

  3. John says:

I watched the video. They need someone other than the metro police looking into this. I do not know what happened before the video, but was it really necessary for the two metro police to pick the guy up from his wheel chair and slam his face on the pavement? This is an outrage.

    1. B says:

And then they charged him with assault.

  4. cris says:

definitely an outrage. if he was disturbing the peace then lock him up, but to throw him on his face like that was unnecessary. but nothing will happen to those cops it will be justified

Handicapped people need to obey the law like ecmveryone else! Some of these disabled people are loiter in cities and in or near public transit and are menaces. I have completely lost compassion for many of them–especially the drunk/ drug addict ones who try to make you feel sorry for them as they deliberately destroy their lives with substance abuse and leech off us law-abiding working tax paying citizens. I’m with the cops–this guy deserved a police smack down like the good ‘ol days of zero tolerance. You act up and out of line in public, you get your a– beat down!

    1. cris says:

shut uo you dont even know what happen

  6. PAUL E. MICELLI says:

LOCK THE BUM UP. HE SHOULD STAY HOME AND DRINK.

  7. JJ says:

Once again, lets tell the cops how to do their jobs. I don’t see cops telling doctors how to do their jobs, carpenters how to their jobs, ect…….

The guy is a THUG, acted up and got what he needed to be taken into custody. I am sure he will cry that he was picked on by the police and his “mommy” will say “my baby my baby, he is a good person”! My answer to that is “lady your son is a THUG”. This will be picked apart by people that have NO CLUE to police work!

    1. shellie says:

      JJ,

IF IT ONLY HAD BEEN YOU, THEN YOU WOULD BE WRITING A DIFFERENT TYPE OF COMMENT.

FOR ANY ONE TO BE HOMELESS, DISABLE AND MENTALLY DISABLE, THAT’S JUST BAD ALL BY IT SELF.

DON’T YOU TELL ME I DON’T HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT POLICE WORK. I WATCH MY OWN RELATIVE ON THE POLICE FORCE BECOME CORRUPTED
AND ALLOW TO REMAIN ON THE FORCE UNTIL THEY RETIRED !!!!!

THEN TO CALL A DISABLE MAN A THUG, YOU MUST BE MENTALLY ILL TOO.
IF THE MAN WAS A THUG, THEN MORE SO OF HIM SITTING STILL HE SHOULD BEEN SEEN TRYING TO ROLL AWAY IN HIS WHEEL CHAIR, BUT THAT DID NOT HAPPEN.

SURE HE SHOULD BEEN CORRECTLY AND SAFELY TAKEN INTO CUSTODY BY THE 2 METRO POLICES BUT NOT TO HAVE BEEN BADLY BEATEN UP AND BLEEDING FROM THE HEAD THAT LEFT A LARGE AMOUNT OF BLOOD ON THE GROUND !

AT THE SAME TIME THE LAW STANDS TO BE HONORED BY ALL PEOPLE. POLICE OFFICERS A PEOPLE TOO AND NOT ABOVE THE LAW.

IF THE 2 METRO POLICE OFFICERS CAN NOT KEEP THE LAW THEN THEY SHOULD NOT EVER HAVE THE PRIVILEGED AND POWER TO BREAK THE LAW AT NO TIME NO MATTER WHAT THE SITUATION COULD BE,

THE ONLY DEFENSE THE POLICE OFFICERS HAVE IS SELF DEFENSE IN SAVING SOME ONE LIFE AND PROTECTING THEIR LIVES, THATS IT.

WHAT LEGAL LAW TOLD AND GAVE POLICE OFFICERS TO GO AROUND AND ACT LIKE THUGS AND HAVE THE RIGHT TO CARRY OUT THEIR OWN LAWS ANY WAY THAT THEY WANT AND BUILDING UP LIES TO JUSTIFY THEIR WRONG POLICE ACTIONS, NOW YOU KNOW D……N WELL THAT IS BREAKING ALL LAWS THAT IS FOUND IN NO BOOKS OF THE LAW.

  8. Jeff says:

As is the case with a lot of videos, only the portion involving the cops subduing someone is actually shown or recorded. The portion where an individual is resisting arrest is never shown. The reason a cop will hit someone on the ground to subdue them is because they are not complying with verbal commands to stop struggling so they can get the cuffs on them. The reason why you have to get the cuffs on is so they don’t grab your gun or grab a gun out of their wasteband and shoot you. That time frame right before they get the cuffs on is very dangerous for any law enforcement officer. At that point tensions get very high espcially if the perp knows he’s going to go to jail and he’s carrying a gun. Being in a wheelchair doesn’t mean your not armed. Don’t resist arrest and you won’t get taken hard to the ground. It’s that simple.

  9. joan says:

THE TWO OFFICERS SHOULD BE FIRED !!! THERE ARE MORE SERIOUS PROBLEMS IN THIS WORLD BESIDE A DISABLE MAN DRINKING ALCOHOL IN PUBLIC.

THE POOR SOUL DID NOT HAVE DRUGS NOR A GUN ON HIM, NOT ONLY THAT., THE DISABLE MAN MIGHT HAVE HAD A MENTAL PROBLEM WHERE AS HE MIGHT NOT FULLY UNDERSTOOD WHAT THE OFFICERS WAS TELLING HIM.

THE DISABLE MAN CARE PROVIDER SHOULD HIRE AN LAWYER AND SUE THE HELL OUT OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR EXCESSIVE FORCE USED AGAINST A DISABLE MENTALLY CHAN LEDGE PERSON.

THE TWO EGO TRIPPING COPS WENT TOO FAR !!!!

I BET ONE MILLION TO ONE CHANCE THAT DISABLE MAN DID NOT FALL OUT OF HIS WHEEL CHAIR ALL BY HIM SELF. THE 2 OFFICERS TRY TO BE SLICK AND TOLD A LIE TO COVER THEIR ERROR OF FORCING THAT MAN TO FALL ON THE GROUND WHEN THE ARRESTED HIM.

    1. ruth says:

i seen the video too, the 2 metro police abuse the law. the man did not try to fight neither office.

the 2 metro police body slammed that home less man in the wheel chair so hard to the ground it’s a wonder if that disable man didn’t die from the force that he suffered to his head. there was a lot of blood on him and seen on the ground.

there is a different between a criminal act that has been committed and a legal arrest with the person being given his due-process of his human rights and the law.

what ever happen verbally between the disable man being in a wheel chair and the 2 metro police. the situation and actions that occurred by the 2 metro police were seen as an injustice act towards the disable man and violated the disable man human right.

this could be used as evidences against the 2 metro police offices clearly went beyond their call of duty.

well, i know this disable man suffered a bad blow to his head, but the truth he

just became a rich man. that man is going to get paid. and paid well !!!.

it would only be right that those 2 metro police be made into example that they too have to respect disable people, all people and keep the law honorable at all times.

all we can do is hope and prey that the disable man will be alright and be bless with a good lawyer and understanding judge so he can have a good case and win.

  10. ravenmaniac881 says:

Hey Joan…..stop screaming, maybe they were on their way to something more serious when dim whit in the wheelchair happened along. Just because he’s in a wheelchair doesn’t mean he gets a free pass.

In Law Enforcement sometimes the worst ones are those who are physically or mentally challenged. Don’t judge them unless you have walked in their shoes and I bet most of you haven’t.
