Md. Man Killed In Forklift Accident

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) — The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says a man was killed in a forklift accident at a book warehouse.

Deputies say at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday, Ronald Schlitzer, 44, of Hampstead was using a forklift to move pallets of books at Random House Publishing in Westminster. Authorities say the forklift hit a shelving unit, traveled under the lower shelf and pinned Schlitzer between a shelving beam and the forklift.

Employees and emergency personnel freed Schlitzer, who died at the scene.

The sheriff’s office as well as the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.

I worked with Ron and he was a great coworker. My prayers go out to the family. We worked third shift and h was never cross and said hi to you when he saw you. We had to go into work tonight and it was hard to walk into the building. we were told we could go home which i did as i could not concentrate on anything. He will be missed.

I never knew this man, but from the description that his coworkers give, we could all strive to aquire his temperment. It is a loss for all of us, when a kind-hearted soul is departed.

Question: Did this forklift have a protective “cage” around the driver? The article does not mention this. Please insist that additional safety measures are taken to insure a safe workplace. I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your friend/coworker.
