National Marbles Tournament Begins In N.J.

WILDWOOD, N.J. (AP) -- Children from five states have gathered in a New Jersey shore resort to compete in the 88th National Marbles Tournament.

The 47 boys and girls in Wildwood are vying to be the first to knock seven marbles out of a circle using a shooter marble. The games are played on the beach in rings that were built for the competition.

Tournament Director Rick Mawhinney told The Press of Atlantic City the contestants are from West Virginia, Tennessee, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Winners on Thursday will receive $2,000 scholarships, $500 sportsmanship awards and trophies.
