WOODLAWN, Md. (AP) — Maryland is saying goodbye to state schools Superintendent Nancy Grasmick after two decades on the job.

A reception for more than 700 people is planned Wednesday evening to honor Grasmick, the nation’s longest-serving appointed state schools chief. Her last day in the post is Thursday. The celebration at Martin’s West in Baltimore County will highlight Grasmick’s accomplishments through video, pictures and performances.

Grasmick became schools superintendent in 1991 during former Gov. William Donald Schaefer’s tenure. The 72-year-old announced in March that she would retire to spend more time with family and take on a more flexible job.

The state Board of Education named former Queen Anne’s County schools superintendent Bernard Sadusky interim superintendent earlier this month.
