BLOG: Scouting Marshal Yanda

I had the chance to sit down and watch the coaches tape for two games on Marshal Yanda. The coaches tape gives me a view of the offensive line that just isn't available watching the broadcast. Getting to focus solely on Marshal, I came up with a scouting report.

Marshal has the size and the strength to play guard. He quickly gets into the pass set and is solid fundamentally there, displaying decent footwork and a good initial punch with the ability to lock out the rusher. He stays off the ground and has a good solid base and maintains good balance. He can mirror his assignments and has the ability to anchor.  He has the ability to angle block in the running game and is can lock up defenders and get them moving on zone run plays. Marshal has the head and the heart required to play on the line in the NFL too, picking up stunts with ease. He really has that nasty streak you like to see from the big uglys and is a competitive guy.

There are a few weaknesses in Marshal's game as well though. He isn't that explosive of a player, and doesn't really move guys when drive blocking. While he is a strong pass blocker, he does get into trouble when he overextends or lunges. He also has trouble handling the speed and quickness of pass rushers off the end while playing right tackle.

In summary, Marshal is a valuable player that has starting experience in the NFL at guard and tackle, which must not be overlooked. While not the most dominant run blocker, tending to grab and pull and get his body in position to shield, he is smart and a plus pass protector. The Ravens have won a lot of games with Marshal Yanda starting and the team will only improve themselves with him at right guard.
