Mount Rainier Officer Indicted On 12 Charges
MOUNT RAINIER, Md. (AP) -- A Mount Rainier police officer has been indicted on attempted murder and sex offense charges after a shooting in Capitol Heights earlier this month.
The Prince George's County State's Attorney's office says Gene Gillette, 27, was indicted Tuesday. Officials said in a statement that a 12-count indictment alleges Gillette shot a man on Glacier Avenue after assaulting him, touching his genitals and trying to sexually assault him on July 2.
Gillette, who was off-duty at the time, initially said that he shot the victim in self-defense while being carjacked.
Gillette turned himself in to county police on Tuesday night. Mount Rainier Police Chief Michael Scott says Gillette was placed on suspension without pay, and his police powers were revoked.
Gillete is scheduled for a bond hearing Wednesday.
