Smoke From Va. Swamp Fire Visible In Parts Of Md.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Officials in Maryland say smoke is reaching the state from a large wildfire burning in southeastern Virginia.

The wildfire in the Great Dismal Swamp National Refuge has so far burned several thousand acres.

Emergency officials in Annapolis said Saturday they've received multiple calls about a strong smoke odor in the area. They say winds are pushing smoke from the fire, which is largely smoldering underground, toward parts of Maryland. But the smoke is not associated with any flames in Maryland.

Baltimore officials say heavy smoke clouds have also reached city limits. Residents are urged to keep windows and doors closed, and people with respiratory illnesses affected by smoke fumes are being encouraged to seek medical attention.
