Furyk Has New Life In The FedEx Cup Standings

Jim Furyk heads into this week's BMW Championship with a bit less on his mind.

Entering the Deutsche Bank Championship, he was 60th on the FedEx Cup Playoffs' point list, 10 spots inside the top 70 that would advance to this week.

Furyk posted four rounds in the 60s to finish at 12-under and finish sixth. The points earned, vaulted him to 35th in the standings. To make it into the season-finale Tour Championship, the reigning champion, needs to crack the top 30.

No doubt, he will enter with a smidgen of confidence after a trying season.

"It's been disappointing, I won't lie," said Furyk, 41, who has just four top-10 finishes. "I think outside of my rookie year, it's probably my worst year on the PGA Tour. It's been somewhat inconsistent. Actually, it's been kind of consistently poor, to be honest with you."

What has made this year even more frustrating is the 2010 season he enjoyed. En route to winning the Tour Championship, Furyk won two other times and posted seven top-10 finishes. He also made the Ryder Cup.

"Last year was basically a dream season," he said. "When I got in a position to win, when I had the opportunity to win tournaments, I was able to close the door and finish off events like I hadn't in the past.

"I never had a season where I won three tournaments before. My peers named me PGA Tour Player of the Year. On top of that, my name will be on the FedEx trophy forever."

In addition to wanting to make a return trip to East Lake in two weeks, Furyk also hopes to make the U.S. Presidents Cup squad. Due largely to last year's stellar season, Furyk presently is ninth in the American point standings — moving up from 11th with last week's finish. The top 10 in points after the BMW Championship automatically qualify.

"Now I feel like I have a little bit of life left in me," he said at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
