Newseum Shows Sports History Through Leifer Photos

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Newseum is opening a new show featuring sports photographer Neil Leifer and his images from some of the great moments in sports history.

The exhibit "Photo Finish: The Sports Photography of Neil Leifer" opened Friday at the museum about news. It features about 50 of Leifer's best-known images, including his famous photograph of boxer Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston after knocking him out in their 1965 title fight.

Other images on view include horse racing legend Secretariat in the 1973 Kentucky Derby and Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi being carried off the field by his players in Super Bowl II.

Leifer was just 18 years old when his photos first made the front of Sports Illustrated.

The exhibit will be on view through August 2012.
