BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) — A new local ad is meant to shock in hopes that you will shop. A Baltimore County jewelry store is trying a new approach to boost their sales, but will it work?

Andrea Fujii has the story.

It’s not your typical jewelry store advertisement. It’s already running in the City Paper and Baltimore Sun. The slogan is “Let’s Grow Old Together,” and it features diverse couples, including two lesbians.

“I think same-sex couples just want the same American dream that straight couples want,” said Sydney Nusinov.

Sydney Nusinov of Charles Nusinov and Sons came up with the idea. He admits it’s potentially controversial but believes it’ll help his bottom line.

“From a business standpoint, I think it would help us to have a whole new subsection of customers getting married,” Nusinov said.

But that won’t happen for a while, as a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in Maryland failed in the last General Assembly. Governor Martin O’Malley is sponsoring the bill again next year, but not without some opposition.

“Two men can never become one and two women can never become one,” said Dr. John Lunn, Baltimore Baptist Ministers’ Conference.

“It’s not morally acceptable to have two men or two women to make up a family,” said Dr. Cleveland Alexander, St. Paul Baptist Church.

But Nusinov says so far, reaction to the ad has been positive, and people WJZ showed it to weren’t affected.

“It doesn’t bother me. I’m not bothered by same-sex couples,” said one.

“I think it’s time that we acknowledge this exists in our society,” said another.

The ad will run through Christmas. Only time will tell if it will help or hurt Nusinov’s business.

Maryland’s same-sex marriage bill was defeated in March after several weeks of debate.

Good for you Charles Nusinov and Sons !

  • Liberal Soldier

Minister Lunn and those of his following are why I could care less about corporate religion. They seem to always have their nose in the affairs of people who are not bothering them. If Lunn would preach love and peace as opposed to suppression and condemnation he would be a more credible spokesman.

Yes = NOM is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty law center. They accepted 2,3 million $$ from the catholic church in NY

and re Bishop Dolan , who ranted against equality for gays– he presided over the church’s hiding hte molestation of children. His former diocese of Milwaukee went bankrupt in January due to successful lawsuits.

Also, Maggie Gallagher of NOM , who supports str8 only marriage – she does that by having not one but 2 illegitimate childdren.

No wonder they are putting her behind the curtain,

And since nom is now on the hate group list, they are giving it a new name.

which should really be bigotry incorporated.

  • SkipjackIV

For me. there are other stores. Some companies will do anything to make money. Just like the Gov, who will do anything to get a vote

  • disgusted

Gays & Lesbains DON’T need the blessing of child-molesting hate mongers. As far as I’m concerned, the REAL gay community deserves an award for not contributing to the disgusting overpopulation of our poor planet. Take a GOOD LOOK at your progegeny!

    • RG86

while we’re at it, let’s just exterminate the elderly and babies, since they don’t cotnribute to our consumer society, right?

  • Kim Taylor

What’s next? Cialis bathtubs with two men? :-/

    • Stephen Kay

      why not?

BTW I’m glad all my children have friends with two mommies or two daddies

Let the ranting begin. the more the anti equality people say, the more they make fools of themselves.

  • frankfletcher1

Why doesn’t WJZ stop being lazy and reach out to denominations that support gay marriage. Better yet – tell the churches to mind their own business.

    • Kim Taylor

Why? Because of something called MORALS. Why would WJZ jeopardize losing viewers to support an immoral minority? Frankly, NORMAL people are getting sick of the gay agenda being shoved down our throats in the media.

      • Stephen Kay

Just liek the rebels got tired of having equality for blacks getting shoved down their throats.

I notice we dont hear about the “sanctity of marriage any more.

because peopel now realize that in the battle to end miscengation laws, the claim was they were

PROTECTING THE SANCTITY OF THE WHITE RACE.

        Same bigotry, different vcitim

  • Cathy

I for one think it is wrong, for one he most likely does not believe either, byhim doing this he is kissing ass to them in hopes to make money,Also on these commercials what if young children see that or even teens, what kind of message does it bring them,Everyone has their opinion and I think couples of the same sex are discusting an wrong and immorral!! I am not the religious type it was just how I was brought up,And yea what is next,Tub commercials with the same sex or those tv ads like next day floors, what same sex couples in those to? I am really ashamed how this world is becoming

    • Mikeb

Huh? I’m ashamed how narrow minded and sheltered you are, Cathy. Get a clue.

    • Katie Murphy- family ex cath

lewts talk about morals. Hitelr had his own morals. He often spoke of christian values.

which included throwing gays, Jews and others into the ovens.

He has yet to be excommunciated.

its obvious why – it would expose his connection to his church.

    • http://ronskemp.wordpress.com ronskemp

Cathy. You asked “what if young children see that or even teens, what kind of message does it bring them?” I will first say that you probably should’ve paid more attention in school. Your grammar is atrocious. Secondly, and more more importantly, people like you lose track of the fact that gay, marriage-seeking adults started off as gay kids and teens. Exactly what message do you think it sends THEM when they constantly see and hear from people such as yourself how immoral, wrong, and perverted they are? Exactly what message do you think it sends them when they constantly see and hear people like you invalidate their feelings? In case you don’t realize it, and I’m pretty sure you don’t, there’s an epidemic hitting this country right now. It’s called teen suicide. And, gay teens are leading that group, sadly enough. And, just why would you think that is? I will tell you. When you take the fact that the teen years are already inherently brutal emotionally, add to it the bullying that goes on at schools (and, apparently, in homes), and top that off with intolerant, hate-filled, unaccepting adults, PARENTS!!!!!!, you have a recipe for disaster. The child’s self-esteem is shot right out the window! Where does the bullies at school come from, Cathy? Any idea? I will tell you. That come from households where the adults think and SPEAK just like you. Here’s a sobering number for you, Cathy: every 18 minutes, EVERY 18 MINUTES!, another teen commits suicide somewhere on this planet. Let that number marinate in your head for a while, and get back to me.

      • Liberal Soldier

You are wasting your time trying to reason with hateful people. They only believe what they are taught. To hell with anyone that does not conform to their idea of what life should be. Most people mind their own business but people like Cathy feel it is their moral duty to shove their beliefs down your throat.

    • JQP

I had a thought, Cathy, why don’t you stop letting your TV raise your children and start talking WITH them about the reality of life and show them how to live with other human beings with whom we disagree in a healthy way. You know, kids learn a lot from their parents behavior…more from their behavior than from their instructions. Best to be a good example of the kind of life you want for your child rather than hoping against hope that the world will conform to your ideal.

  • Tonstun

yea right. Child-molesters can’t come from a gay community…..like the Man Boy Association!!! If gays kept it personal and not shove it into everyone’s face people than there would not be so much fanfare. When was the last time you saw the National Adultery Association march down the street wearing signs and protesting…..

    • tsk-tsk

Hi sweets, I am a female survivor of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of a man. Pedophelia is not a “gay” thing, babe, it ‘s a sick thing.

Are you married? Have a significant other? Are you intimate with that person? Is that of my business? Would you like the government to disallow your relationship because a group of people with a lot of pull thinks your spouse is too ugly? or blind? or black? or handicapped? and, therefore, not right for you? I’m sorry, sir, your wife cannot bare children and is therefor not appropriate or legal for you to marry. Yeah, I see that going over very well.

  • zoro

When will people learn that you can’t legislate morality. Leave these people alone, if they want to get married ok, divorce ok, Us straight people have done a pretty good job of f…..k ‘g up the divorce statistics.

  • Bob

A thought question if I may — was it appropriate for the first paragraph to say that the advertisement was intended to *shock* people? Wouldn’t it be more on the mark to say it was intended to *enlighten* people? Look at difference in the messages that are being sent!

  • 95 % Are Not Gay

It is inevitable that society will eventually regard same-sex couples as “normal” and acceptable. However, for the 95% of Americans that do not plan to enter into a same-sex relationship in their lifetimes, it would be wise to note that the escalation of Gay publicity on our television and computer screens, is not a “natural” progression of social advancement. Rather, it is a biased agenda of a relatively small percentage of people who control the media sources.
As with any agenda that requires “behind the scenes” deception, in order to accomplish its goal, the bottom line is that the majority are not consciously supportive of the goal, despite their willingness to show politically correct tolerance for those who are.

    • http://ronskemp.wordpress.com ronskemp

Wow, really. You people acts if this whole “gay thing” is something new. Gays have been around since your biblical days! It’s just that like-minded people such as yourself have spent so much of their lives and energies marginalizing gays. Gays have been part of the very fiber of this country for as long as it’s been a country. You hear and see more about us to because of this thing that Al Gore invented called the Internet. The information highway. See, no longer can you sit in your little rose-colored living room in your snug little homes and pretend not only that gays don’t really matter or that life is Ward Clever. Instantaneously, you have access to the world…right from you hate-filled living room. And, in the real world, gays do exist and have existed forever.

      • Moleman

        ronskemp, U boring prick, STFU.

    • Liberal Soldier

I think what you are seeing is 95% of Americans making a concious decision NOT to stand in the way of human rights and fairness. Most people go about their lives and not try to force their views on others. Unfortunately there are people who will spend all of their time and energy trying to deny others basic rights. Some are on these boards.

    • JQP

Excuse me, 95%, but if I may…. I am one of the 95% of the public (an arbitrary statistic on your part by the way) who are not gay. I find that most of the gay-geared TV to be aimed at adults (home and garden, weddings, design, that sort of programming), where I find most of the really offensive stuff aimed at children: oversexualizing little girls with make up and scant cloathing, twisty little hips, lairs and murder…and this from a “family” channel.

So, instead of aiming your energy at people who are trying to encourage a lifelong partnership, perhaps your energies would be better spent trying to counteract the damage tv really is aiming at our kids….maybe take the TV out of the equation, entirely. Wouldn’t that be a start for people like us who want our children to grow up with our morals and not the morals of Hollywood?

For the record, I am all for committed relationships of any kind as long as they are comprised of consenting adults.

  • Susan

It shocks me how intolerant people are still as evidenced by the comments above. We just want to be happy and have the same rights as others. We are no different from you!

    • http://ronskemp.wordpress.com ronskemp

Susan, they just don’t understand that. Their smallmindedness, and programming, makes them hold on to the rhetoric that we are in search of “special” rights, or that we’re always “shoving” our “lifestyle” down their throats. In reality, it is they who shove their immoral “morality” down OUR throats. I didn’t give a rat’s a## when any of them married. Why are they so bent out of shape about what I do with my life? Oh, and understand, this isn’t a new battle. It’s just wearing a different banner. Some of the previous banners were Civil Rights and Women’s Rights. Do you see a connection? Can you get a better picture of who the true “enemy” is? We really ARE no different than they. And, I can say that twice!

  • silly2

Why should anyone care who is in a relationship with whom? I honestly believe people are born gay. I was born being attracted to dark haired men, I don’t choose to be, I just am! And if I were a man I would be gay, I LOVE men!. I dare ANYONE to tell me who I can or cannot love. No one (including cathy & 95%) is BORN a bigot. But you can get above your raisin’.
