MOUNT AIRY, Md. (AP) — A new food bank in Maryland is offering a helping hand to needy horses.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that the Maryland Hay Bank in Mount Airy began giving emergency feed to horses about two months ago. Coordinator Jenny Kurtz says the goal of the bank is to help horse owners who have fallen on tough times.

About 400 bales of hay have been granted so far. Kurtz says she expects demand to be the highest during the winter months.

The hay bank accepts cash donations and buys all of its hay locally.
