American Wins 6th Straight, 69-58 Over UMBC

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Charles Hinkle scored 18 points and American University defeated winless Maryland-Baltimore County 69-58 on Thursday night for its sixth straight victory.

The winning streak matched last season's longest for the Eagles.

Hinkle, who hit 7 of 8 free throws, has scored double-digit points in every game this season.

Troy Brewer added 15 points for American (6-2) and Tony Wroblicky posted a career-high 13 rebounds.

The Retrievers (0-7) opened up a 28-22 lead, but the Eagles closed out the final 4:05 of the first half with a 15-4 run.

After the break, American used an 8-2 spurt to push the lead into double figures and UMBC could get no closer than six the rest of the way.

The Eagles made 20 of 32 free throws compared to 12 of 17 for the Retrievers.

Chase Plummer had 18 points and nine rebounds for UMBC, which won the battle of the boards 41-36.
