WASHINGTON (AP) — A new budget proposal that would raise Metro fares also calls for the hiring of more than 1,000 employees.

Metro General Manager Richard Sarles plans to present the board of directors on Thursday.

The new workers would increase the total number of Metro employees from 11,319 to 12,332. A Metro spokesman did not have an estimate of how much the new jobs would cost for salaries and benefits.

The Washington Post reports that the new workers would include more than employees for Metro’s “safety and state of good repair” efforts, including track and maintenance projects.

The proposed fare increases would affect most areas, including bus and rail fares and parking.
